Relationship Counselling

Relationship counselling is a general term which includes counselling for relationships such as friends and coworkers, and it also refers to marriage and couples; counselling, family counselling, and premarital counselling.

A healthy individual requires healthy relationships, but for numerous

reasons, relationships can get stuck in unhealthy or stressful cycles.

Therapy can be a place to navigate through and improve the quality of

interpersonal relationships by developing new levels of self-awareness and insight as well as by fostering practical relationship skills and overcoming interpersonal challenges. Some areas of focus might include learning to be more assertive, overcoming shyness, ending unhealthy relationship patterns, dealing with anger, and fostering a stronger sense of self confidence.

3

Couples Counselling

Couples therapy can be beneficial to help partner’s improve their

communication and to resolve conflict. Many couples wait until the

relationship is in trouble to start counselling but it can be helpful to open up critical conversations before things become dire. It can also be helpful to do pre-marital therapy and explore some of your individual beliefs about important topics.

Our counsellors have been trained to address various relationship issues, including:

Parenting

Finances

Sexual challenges

Emotional intimacy

Separation and Divorce

Co-parenting after separation

Aging sexuality

Porn use

Sexuality after loss or traumatic events

Sex and dating after separation and divorce

We offer integrative approaches that are empirically validated to help

couples who are experiencing difficulties in their relationships. Emotion

Focussed Therapy (EFT), Narrative Therapy, and Solution Focused Therapy are often used.

4

Family Counselling

We offer treatment to children, adolescents and families struggling with a variety of mental health problems.

5

Adolescent Counselling

Adolescent Counselling

Adolescence is a period that can be intense and overwhelming to navigate at times. There are many different types of challenges that adolescents face, from academic, cognitive, physical changes, social, emotional, family, and other important areas of life. Given the many types of changes present during this stage of life and the developmental variation during the teenage years, counselling with adolescents must account for both an emerging sense of self and independence through diverse challenges, as well as a need to feel supported and understood.

Making the transition from childhood to adulthood has never been easy for anyone, but the traditional challenges associated with adolescence are exacerbated by the prominence of the Internet, social media platforms, and a new kind of peer pressure and desire to belong that has never existed before. All of these factors create enormous possibilities accompanied by great instability and confusion for adolescents and their families.

We provide collaborative, compassionate, and effective therapy to promote growth and change. We offer a welcoming environment for teenagers to explore their concerns and are committed to providing a positive counselling experience.

6

Child Counselling

We offer evidence-based therapies and compassionate care that create a safe and supportive environment for children and teenagers. Our professional therapists work closely with each family to develop

individualized treatment plans, addressing the specific challenges each

child may face.

Services We Provide

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Kids and Teens

CBT helps children and teens develop healthy coping mechanisms by

recognizing and challenging negative thought patterns. It is particularly

effective for treating anxiety, depression, and behavioral issues, which are common among young individuals with autism or ADHD.

Play Therapy

Play therapy allows children to express their emotions and experiences

through play, making it easier for them to communicate and process

feelings. This method is especially useful for younger children who may

struggle with verbal expression.

Parent Management Training (PMT)

We believe that parental involvement is key to a child’s success in therapy. Our PMT sessions teach parents strategies to manage their child’s behavior and promote positive interactions at home and in everyday life.

Social Skills Training

Our therapists use role-playing and other interactive methods to help

children and teens develop the social skills necessary for building

friendships, interacting with peers, and succeeding in social environments.

Marriage Counselling

Is your relationship filled with conflict and arguments?  Have you lost trust in your partner because of their dishonesty or infidelity?  Do you feel lonely even though you’re in a relationship?  Are you worried your relationship is damaged beyond repair?

When things start to go wrong in a relationship it can feel like a

downward spiral you can’t break out of, but so long as both partners are committed to remaining in the relationship, and willing to work together on the relationship, there is hope.

We also work with couples who have a good relationship but want to

seek therapy as a preventative measure.

Some couples seek therapy as a way to evaluate their readiness for

taking the next step in their relationship, whether it’s moving in together, getting married, starting a family, or relocating to a new area.

Working with an experienced couples therapist can help you be sure

both you’re on the same page and prepared to handle any issues that

might come up in the next stage of your relationship.

Whatever your relationship needs are, we’re here to help.

Modalities We Use

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy

The central principle of CBT is that our thoughts, emotions, physical reactions and behaviours are part of a unified system. In CBT, the therapist and client work together, to explore, explain and modify unhelpful patterns of thoughts and behaviours that are the basis of psychological problems.

CBT is a goal oriented, client-centred approach to an individual’s personal circumstances and experiences. Once the various skills are taught, they can be easily applied to many aspects of a client’s life. Study results have indicated that as few as 3-6 sessions of CBT will have a significant impact on issues such as depression and anxiety.

CBT has shown to be effective with a number of psychological problems including, but not limited to:

Depression

Insomnia

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Panic Disorder

Chronic Pain

Self-Esteem

Worry

Fears

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Separation Anxiety

Social Phobia

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Eating Disorders

CBT is a well validated treatment modality and one of the most extensively utilized and researched forms of therapy. Given the emphasis in empiricism, CBT approaches to treatment are continually evolving to

respond to new developments in research and clinical practice.

Emotion Focused Therapy

Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) is a structured and empirically validated approach to individual, couples and family therapy. It is based on clear, explicit conceptualizations of emotional distress, and is collaborative and respectful of the client’s own experience of emotion.

EFT helps clients develop their emotional intelligence so that they can deal with their problems and live in better harmony with themselves and others.

Emotions are naturally adaptive but can become problematic due to past trauma or because people are taught to ignore or dismiss their emotions.

Emotions tell us what is important in a situation and guide us to what we need or want or to figure out what actions are appropriate.

Clients are encouraged to experience their emotions within the safety of the therapy session so they can discover for themselves the value of greater awareness, more flexible management of and more productive use of emotions.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

DBT is a specific and intensive therapy program designed to treat individuals with significant emotion dysregulation. The main goal of DBT is to build a life worth living. This therapy combines dialectics and

behaviourism to support clients. The concept of dialectics is that two supposedly opposing things can be true at the same time. One of the most common dialectics in DBT is balancing acceptance and change. For example, the idea that you are currently doing the best you can and you can do better. In DBT, therapists and clients are in an equal relationship and work together as a team to make therapy effective.

DBT helps people understand how emotion dysregulation is present in various areas of their lives, such as self-concept, relationships, health, etc.

Common behaviour targets in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) are suicidal ideation and behaviours, self-harm, substance use, disordered eating, and risky behaviours (e.g., driving under the influence of alcohol or risky sexual behaviours). DBT is also an evidence based treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder.

Solution Focused Brief Therapy

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a short-term goal-focused evidence-based therapeutic approach, which incorporates positive psychology principles and practices, and which helps clients change by

constructing solutions rather than focusing on problems. In the most basic sense, SFBT is a hope friendly, positive emotion eliciting, future-oriented

vehicle for formulating, motivating, achieving, and sustaining desired behavioral change.

Solution-Focused practitioners develop solutions by first generating a detailed description of how the client’s life will be different when the problem is gone or their situation improved to a degree satisfactory to the client. Therapist and client then carefully search through the client’s life experience and behavioral repertoire to discover the necessary resources

needed to co-construct a practical and sustainable solution that the client can readily implement. Typically this process involves identifying and

exploring previous “exceptions,” e.g. times when the client has successfully coped with or addressed previous difficulties and challenges. In an inherently respectful and practical interview process, SF therapists and their clients consistently collaborate in identifying goals reflective of clients’ best hopes and developing satisfying solutions.

The practicality of the SFBT approach may stem in part from the fact that it was developed inductively in an inner-city outpatient mental health service

setting in which clients were accepted without previous screening. The developers of SFBT spent countless hours observing therapy sessions over the course of several years, carefully noting any sorts of questions, statements or behaviors on the part of the therapist that led to positive therapeutic outcome. Questions, statements, and activities associated with

clients reporting progress were subsequently preserved and incorporated into the SFBT approach.
